What Surprised Me After Opening the Studio

When we first opened the studio, I expected people to be interested in the technology and the concept. What surprised me most was how strongly people reacted to the physical scale of the space itself.

Almost every first-time visitor says some version of, “I didn’t realize how big this was.” They’re not talking about their plans yet. They’re talking about the room they’re standing in.

The projection floor alone is 3,000 square feet, and that number is hard to picture until you’re physically inside it. Photos and videos can explain the idea, but they don’t communicate what it feels like to stand in a space where you can actually move through a full layout without feeling constrained.

One of the first things we notice is hesitation. People step into the studio and pause. They look around, take in the height and width of the room, and aren’t quite sure where to start. When we’re walking a home, we usually place a simple welcome mat at the front door of the projected plan and guide them there. We’ll say, “Imagine this is your front door. This is how you enter your home.”

That’s when the questions start. People ask how tall the walls are or whether the widths are accurate. We’ll pull out a measuring tape and show them that what they’re seeing is within a sixteenth of an inch of the real dimensions. Almost immediately, their posture changes. They stop treating the plan like a drawing and start treating it like a place.

After that moment passes, the reactions are consistent. “This is crazy.” “I’m so glad we did this.” What’s validating isn’t just hearing those words, but watching people shift from observing the space to actively using it. They spread out, they move, and they begin making decisions with confidence.

That experience has been one of the most grounding parts of opening the studio. It reinforced how important physical understanding is when it comes to making good decisions about space.
